2007 Euro-Mediterranean Summit of Economic and Social Councils and similar institutions

The Summit, co-organised by the Economic and Social Council of Greece (O.K.E.) and the European Economic and Social Committee (E.E.S.C.) brought together representatives of organised civil society from all ten partner countries that participate in the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation and from many EU countries as well as networks such as the Union of Mediterranean Confederations of Enterprises, the Trade Union Forum and the Euromed Youth Platform.

The Summit was opened by His Excellency the President of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Karolos Papoulias and closed by Ms Dora Bakoyannis, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece.

The Summit was addressed by Mr. Polyzogopoulos, President of the O.K.E., Mr. Dimitriadis, President of the EESC, Ms Kalantzakos, Deputy Minister of Employment and Social Protection, Dr. Sorour, President of the Parliament of Egypt and Vice-President of the Euromed Parliamentary Assembly, Prof. Hegazy, Former Prime Minister of Egypt, Prof. Bruto da Costa, President of the ESC of Portugal, on behalf of the Portuguese Presidency, Mr. Wissels, Director at the European Commission and responsible for the Coordination of European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP).

Several topics were discussed during the summit, such as the ENP, the strengthening of participatory structures in the partner countries, competitiveness and social dialogue and the role of women in society.
